🌿 A Beginner’s Guide to Essential Oils: 3 Great Ones to Start With
Curious about essential oils but don’t know where to start? I get it — there are loads of them out there, and a lot of beginner’s guide blog posts drown you in a sea of memories of grandparents, long tales of history, and mile-long lists of dubious-sounding health claims. I’ll try to avoid doing any of that here – so let’s just get on with it.
Below, I’m going to recommend just three essential oils for beginners. They’re easy to use, smell amazing, and are proper little multitaskers. Furthermore, you can buy all three for less than a tenner, so you’re not going to break the bank while testing your new project! So whether you’re aiming for calm, a boost of energy, or just something that smells good without giving you a headache, let’s get started.
💜 1. Lavender – The Calm One
If I could only have one essential oil, it would probably be lavender. It’s like the herbal equivalent of a weighted blanket — calming, soothing, and generally lovely.

Why I love it:
- Helps you wind down before bed
- Takes the edge off stressy days
- Can even soothe irritated skin (when diluted)
How to use it:
- Pop a couple of drops in a diffuser in the evening
- Mix with a carrier oil for a relaxing massage
- Put a drop on a tissue and tuck it in your pillowcase (or bra — no judgement)

🌬️ 2. Peppermint – The Wake-Me-Up
This one’s fab if you’re feeling foggy or a bit meh. Peppermint gives you that fresh, minty “ahhh” feeling. Think cooling, clearing, and definitely not shy.

Why I love it:
- Great for focus when your brain’s gone on strike
- Helps with tension headaches (again, dilute it!)
- Clears the sinuses if you’re a bit bunged up
How to use it:
- Add to a diffuser during that mid-afternoon slump
- Mix into a carrier oil and massage into your temples
- Inhale a drop from a tissue if you need a quick boost

🍊 3. Orange – The Cheerful One
Orange essential oil is pure joy in a bottle. It’s bright, sweet, and gently uplifting — like someone just handed you a warm hug and a glass of sunshine.

Why I love it:
- Instantly lifts the mood (seriously, try sniffing it when you’re grumpy)
- Makes your home smell fresh and inviting
- Pairs beautifully with other oils like cinnamon, clove, and patchouli
How to use it:
- Add a few drops to your diffuser for a cheerful atmosphere
- Mix into a carrier oil and use as an uplifting massage blend
- Great in homemade cleaning sprays (bonus: it helps remove sticky label residue!). Just be sure to do a patch test first

💡 A Few Tips for Getting Started
- Always dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before putting them on your skin. They’re super concentrated!
- A little goes a long way. Two drops in a diffuser is often enough.
- Store them somewhere cool and dark — not next to your hob or on a sunny windowsill.
