This handsome hippo ornament stands tall and elegant in all it’s natural glory.
Hand carved in Africa, this soapstone hippo is has been left undyed to allow the natural beauty of the soapstone to shine through.
The majority of the world’s soapstone originates from Kisii in the western highlands of Kenya, making it the home to the finest soapstone artisans and carvers. Soapstone is the term used for rocks that contain a high talc content and is also referred to as soap rock or steatite.
To prepare the soapstone for carving, it is soaked in water to soften it. Using a hammer and chisel, the basic shape is sculpted, and then colour is added. A smaller knife, known as a “kisu,” is subsequently employed for the detailed engraving or illustration work.
It is believed that soapstone possesses calming properties and can aid individuals in adapting to and coping with change. It is associated with the Root Chakra, the number 7, the zodiac sign Sagittarius, and the element Air.
