What Does Fair Trade Mean?

What does fair trade mean? For us, it’s simple: people and planet first. It means knowing that the items on our shelves were made by people who are paid fairly, treated with respect, and supported to build brighter futures. And it means our customers can shop with confidence, knowing their purchase makes a difference.

Fair trade is about more than just wages. It’s a global movement rooted in dignity, opportunity, and sustainability. To make sense of it, the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) set out the following ten principles that guide the whole system.

Being truly fair trade, though, isn’t just about buying, it’s about doing. Here at Near & Fair, we don’t just talk the talk – we walk the walk, too. So let’s look at those 10 principles again, and let me tell you what we do.

1. Opportunities for disadvantaged producers

We work with suppliers who ensure their artisans are paid fairly and treated with dignity. Many started their journeys after seeing first-hand the struggles faced by communities in the global south. Instead of the old charity model of “aid,” fair trade is about creating long-term partnerships built on respect and sustainable income.

2. Transparency and accountability

As proud members of BAFTS Fair Trade Network UK, we’re audited each year to prove where our stock comes from. At least 60% must be sourced through recognised fair trade channels — and we’re delighted to say our percentage is even higher. For the rest, we choose ethical UK makers and suppliers who share our values.

3. Fair trade practices

We don’t haggle or squeeze suppliers for discounts. In fact, we prefer to pay upfront, which helps suppliers pay their producers without cash-flow worries. Fair trade is about building trust — and trust works both ways.

4. Fair payment

We select suppliers who guarantee their producers earn a fair wage. In our own shop, it’s mostly just the two of us, with a little help from our adult children (who we pay generously!)

5. No child labour and no forced labour

This one’s non-negotiable. We only work with suppliers who can prove their producers are free from exploitation.

6. Equality and empowerment

Fair trade actively champions women, minorities, and marginalised communities. We’ve seen wonderful photos of proud, smiling makers who’ve gained independence through their craft. In our shop, the same ethos applies: fairness, inclusivity, and standing up for people’s rights.

7. Good working conditions

Our suppliers are committed to safe, healthy workplaces. And closer to home, we make sure our own shop is comfortable, accessible, and safe — even if it means investing in extra equipment (I’ve swapped ladders for a sturdy kick stool and long hook, and my back says thank you!).

8. Capacity building

Fair trade is about growth, not just survival. By supporting wholesalers who reinvest in producer training and resources, we help small enterprises build brighter futures. Locally, we also take part in community events to keep learning and sharing.

9. Promoting fair trade

Every conversation in our shop is an opportunity to spread the word. During Fairtrade Fortnight and other events, we love telling the stories behind our products — and customers really do light up when they see photos of the people who made them.

10. Respect for the environment

Sustainability is baked into fair trade. But we also go further:

• We use paper bags.
• We reuse and recycle packaging, right down to bubble wrap and shredded paper. What we can’t reuse, we compost where possible.
• We choose nearby suppliers where possible to cut down on transport miles.

Fair trade and eco-friendly living go hand in hand.
